On 9th February 2009, all were invited to a ’boomi pooja’ (land sanctification ceremony) for the third Sandipani Muni school. Children from the current Sandipani primary and secondary schools attended, as did a tour group from the U.K. The five volunteers currently working at Sandipani Muni School and fifty local villagers also witnessed the ceremony. The head of the construction company that will organize the building of the school played a leading role in performing the boomi pooja. In this traditional ritual, attendees pray for the safety of the construction site, the building and its inhabitants. After the ritual burying of bricks, sweets were handed out to the children and guests to symbolize the sharing of a sweet occasion. Brijesh Chandra, a head of department at Sandipani Muni School said, "it was really nice to attend this ceremony with so many children and well wishers. The children really enjoyed singing and running around on the land that will soon be home to a brand new Sandipani Muni School". The construction of the new school will begin immediately and is due to be completed in July 2010. It will have places for 864 children from primary to junior high school level. Food for Life Vrindavan also plans to build a nursery and a senior-high school so that eventually, the Sandipani Muni School in Kikinagla village will cater for the entire educational needs of thousands of poor rural children. |
